2. The scientific meaning of wellness is the state of being healthy and free of diseases. |
Some definition of wellness are- |
“The fact or condition of being physically and mentally healthy.” |
“The quality or state of being healthy” is called wellness. |
Wellness can be defined as, “the pursuit of a healthy and balanced lifestyle.” |
Importance of Physical Fitness and Wellness

1. These are necessary for reducing the risk of heart and lung diseases. |
2. Physically fit individuals tend to have lower resting blood pressure. |
3. Everyone wants to maintain one’s physical fitness to perform the routine work easily. |
4. Physical fitness is important for daily activities like walking, running, lifting and carrying weights. |
5. Physical fitness also improves posture and appearance. |
6. Doctors indicate that physical fitness maintains muscular tissues, decreases the risk of injury and reduces lower back pain. |

2. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, “A way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or a group.” |
3. In an Encyclopedia of Public Health, “Lifestyle generally means a pattern of individual practices and personal behavioural choices that are related to elevate or reduce health risks.” |
4. “Lifestyle is a set of attitudes, habits or possessions associated with a particular person or group.” |
5. “A way of living of individuals, groups and societies, which manifest in coping with their physical, psychological, social and economic environments on a day to day basis.” |
“Lifestyle is a pattern of behaviour or the way an individual lives.“ |
“Lifestyle is the typical way of life of an individual, group or culture.” |
In fact, lifestyle is a way a person leads his/her life. It includes the patterns of social relation, consumption, entertainment and dress. Lifestyle is expressed in activities, attitudes, interests, opinions and values. It also reflects person’s self-image or self-concept, the way they see themselves and how they are seen by other people. |
Importance of Healthy/Positive Lifestyle |
What we eat and drink, how much exercise we do and whether we smoke or take drugs, all these affect our health. It is usually seen that conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, mental illness, etc., are responsible for a vast number of deaths and disabilities. |
